Recognizing & Responding to Youth Risk

A 2-Day Intensive to Equip Staff for Real-World Youth Challenges in a Northern and Indigenous Context

What is From Risk to Resilience?

This is not a typical training. From Risk to Resilience is an immersive, scenario-based workshop where participants don’t just learn strategies; they practice them in real time. Over two days, staff follow realistic youth profiles from first concern, to crisis intervention to long-term resilience planning. Grounded in Indigenous knowledge and evidence-based practices, this training bridges the gap between theory and frontline action.

Why This Training Matters

Communities are seeing a rise in youth mental health challenges, trauma, substance use, and quiet gang recruitment. Staff need more than awareness. They need skills and confidence to act. This training equips your team to:

  • Identify complex risk factors early
  • Use trauma- and brain-based approaches to guide response
  • Support youth in crisis using the HEART model
  • Interrupt escalation with real-time de-escalation skills
  • Build visible, strengths-based pathways to resilience

What Makes This Training Different

Training Modules Overview

01. Mapping Risk & Strengths

Retro Section Separator

Goal: Understand what’s driving behaviour and where resilience lives.
Hands-On: Participants analyze youth profiles using a risk/resilience map to identify key drivers and protective factors.

02. ACEs, Trauma & the Pull of Gangs

Retro Section Separator

Goal: Recognize how trauma shapes behaviour and opens the door to gang influence.
Hands-On: Participants trace trauma cycles, map brain impacts, and learn how unmet needs become recruitment openings and how to redirect them.

03. Motivational Interviewing in Action

Retro Section Separator

Goal: Shift from “fixing” to listening and guiding change.
Hands-On: Using transcripts from their youth profiles, staff practise motivational interviewing (MI) skills like OARS with real-time feedback.

04. Mental Health & the HEART Model

Retro Section Separator

Goal: Spot early mental health struggles — even when youth can’t name them.
Hands-On: Participants use the HEART model to read non-verbal cues, practise co-regulation, and create safe escalation plans.

05. Crisis & De-escalation Labs

Retro Section Separator

Goal: Build calm, confident responders under pressure.
Hands-On: In live role-play labs, participants respond to escalating crisis scenarios, practising stance, pacing, tone, and de-escalation skills using a Green–Yellow–Red continuum.
